Specific Interests

My current doctoral research is developing an Evo-Devo Concept Inventory (EDCI) to measure life-science majors’ understanding of evo-devo. Evo-devo concepts are now covered in K-12 science classrooms and textbooks and a growing number of undergraduate courses are being taught that cover evo-devo. Many life-science graduates and medical professionals still lack an understanding of evolutionary theory, and understanding concepts other than natural selection may be a key in increasing the overall understanding of evolutionary biology among life-science majors. I am currently a National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent) Graduate Fellow and a member of the NESCent Evo CI Toolkit working group which are developing several evolutionary concept inventories. I also have interests in evaluating inquiry-based teaching and learning attitudes among faculty, teacher-educators, and pre-service teachers using Q-methodology which can be applied to understand how pre-service teachers’ viewpoints about inquiry change throughout their degree program. I also currently serve as a research assistant integrating biology and chemistry concepts into introductory courses. I have formerly served as the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) Graduate Student Committee Chair which holds annual workshops to educate and provide a forum for future faculty and pre-service teachers in the life-sciences.
